I lived at 42 West Oakland Avenue for a year. Overall, I would recommend it to someone else. The building seems a bit old (can clearly see the repairs they've done on the ceiling, walls etc) but its the best one bedroom I've seen on campus (except for
the place above Ledo's...).
The A/C is kinda weak during the summer (I lived on the top floor) but nothing fans can't help out with. Had both the heater and A/C go out on me twice but were fixed promptly (longest was 2 days to get the A/C fixed). There is only one tiny vent for the whole apartment (which is really more of a studio size than one bedroom).
Its very quiet in the building except for the occasional loud sex and music but thats to be expected.
No problems with the carpet or smells but did have a drainage problem with the bathroom sink.
Fridge worked really good, stove worked fine (kinda smelled sometimes when not used for awhile).
Utilities were budgeted when I lived there but still cheap (I was paying $458/month with rent + utilites).
All in all, good place but kinda cramped if you have alot of people over.
I rented from spring '06 through spring '07.
