Consider this a warning to anyone who decides to rent this apartment. FCS management then notifies us of change in management. Being excited that someone might finally come to fix the apartment, I contacted FCS to notify them about insect population and health problems. Sadly, they began dragging their feet and instead of fixing the problem they suggested I forget about the problems and move out and move on with life. Due to previous my current and past health issues, I decided that the FCS' actions were not acceptable, so I contacted various attorneys around nation for information regarding the testing of black mold; in addition, I contacted Washington DC based laboratories specializing in OSHA and EPA compliance for employees at multi-national organizations, I was quoted $50.00 for a mold test by mail from this microbiology lab. I contacted Craig Thomas at BYU in the off-campus housing department. I then spoke to a Provo based law firm who was willing to take my case pro bono as long as I could provide test results of mold and cause-and-effect of illnesses. Lawyer was very very very excited to take on FCS and apartment owners due to his personal knowledge of FCS past carelessness. I then notified FCS that I contacted a Lawyer. The very next day, FCS sends over a repairman who cuts off pieces of carpet by base boards to re-stretch carpet. When carpet is pulled out from underneath wall, thick black growth of some weird substance covered the foundation behind the drywall. I asked the maintenance man what the substance is and he claimed, "probably just dirt, no need to worry." I kindly agreed with him even though my intentions were to test black substance through Washington DC laboratory. After the maintenance repairmen finished stretching the carpet, I asked if I could have a sample of the carpet and the repairmen said, "Oh, we can't do that, we would get in trouble." I then sent an email to FCS' headquarters asking why they won't allow me a carpet sample, even though I retrieved a sample from inner wall myself, and they emailed me pictures of carpet sample stating, "see there is no mold." I explained to them that taking a picture of carpet is not the method whereby one is able to test for and identify mold, however, they insisted that the picture was proof enough. Craig Thomas stopped by my apartment to inspect the problem. He saw the springtail insects and I showed him the carpet area that they had removed and I explained to him my health issues and gaseous smell throughout bedroom. Instead of helping to mend the problem, Craig Thomas said, "Not to worry, that black stuff just might be from the bugs or it could be dirt." Craig Thomas then explained how he has white carpet in his home that accumulates dirt, and I kindly listened to his irrelevant story knowing full well that he had no intention of conducting future investigations and/or testing. I then informed FCS management and Craig Thomas that a mold test would cost only $50.00, however no test was ever considered nor conducted. To this day, the apartment remains in ruin. So much so, that even as I write this commentary, I have gnats flying around my face and in my ears. I've prayed nearly constantly to get through this mess, and I am praying that these comments make it to other students so they won't have to suffer as I have. I probably shouldn't tell this to anyone, but my health has deteriorated so severely by this apartment's living conditions that for the first time in my life I considered taking my own life to end my pain. Fortunately myself, however, I my strong will personality and faith has paid off and I am here another day to possibly help other students avoid my same disaster. Please if you have friends that plan on living at the Belmont under FCS management, or if you have friends that are considering signing a contract for this apartment, let them know what you read here. If possible, when you tell a friend, please leave comments below so that I know my words reached out and helped another. You can also email me at brokenbody.strongspirit@gmail.com. I rented from fall 10 through fall 11. ...
