June 28, 2011 Now called the District on 62nd, used to be Melrose. TERRIBLE! My first complain about the district is that they claim to be "financial aid friendly". This is a blatant lie. I am a student at UF, and for the first time in almost an entire year since living here, I had to ask for a one day extension on my rent, because my financial aid is only getting disbursed on friday and rent is due sunday the latest, and the bank will not process the financial aid over the weekend. Well, I was denied, and notified that I needed to pay a late fee of $50. This is perfectly fair, except for the fact that they have a giant banner saying that they are financial aid friendly. My second complain is that the neighborhood is really bad. The cops are always here because something weird is happening. People are always breaking through the gate at the front. The security is never there, and when he or she is, they let anyone through and sometimes don't even do their job. I went to get my friend at the gate once and the security was drinking whisky out of the bottle. Yeah. The box at the gate NEVER stores your number, no matter how many times you tell the front office to put it in, which means you have to go get your friends at the gate if the security is not there to let them through. Everything in the apartment is always breaking, which is understandable for the price, but the office takes too long to fix it. Example #1: All the bathtubs in the apartment were flooded, I called the office to fix them. A week went by and nothing... I went to Miami for a week to see my family, and when I came back, THEY WERE STILL FLOODED, and I couldn't take a shower. So, I had to call and bitch at the office that 2 weeks had gone by and they were still not fixed. Can you blame me? And STILL they did not fix it until 3 days after. Example #2: The dishwasher broke and flooded the kitchen the day before I had gone on summer vacation. I called but left to my hometown the next day, and when I came back 4 days later, it STILL wasn't fixed. They came to fix it 2 days after I came back, after I called 3 times. They match you with roommates not based on similarity, and charge $200 to switch roommates. Its ridiculous. The roommate me and my 2 friends got at first didn't want a dog, which I had and had told the district I had. We had huge problems over it. And, he was a total creep and was always hitting on my and my friend. Not to mention he was older. Oh, and did I mention that once he physically hurt me? Yeah, my friend and I were joking that he was gay, and he literally shoved me into the wall, hard. And, of course I told the District all of this, and they still sided with him when he tried to hit my best friend and her boyfriend who didn't live here got pissed and got into a fight with him. So, yeah... the District sucks. Move somewhere nicer like the Polos or Cabana Beach, I am doing this next year :) I rented from fall 10 through fall 11. ...

" I will not be held hostage by a 21 year old and her Christmas" was the comment that the property manager told one father. A young lady had signed with another apartment, as her lease had expired. She made arrangements with the office to stay until January 3rd of 2011 since her new place wasn't ready yet. The office agreed to let her stay at a prorated rate. December 21st she got a call from management asking her to return her keys. When she informed the person regarding her arrangement, they told her that since nothing was in writing, she had 24 hours to vacate. When she asked what would happen if she didn't ;eave, they told her that they would deactivate her key, take her belongings and sell them. This young lady called her father who happens to be an attorney from another state, and when he phoned the general manager she told him the above statement. This is just one incident from a resident. My situation is, I was hijacked every month for the last 3 months in fees. I wouldn't know anything about these fees, except I just happen to go to the office for something when they informed me.They gave me an impossible date in which to pay them, and then informed me that due to their new system, Even if I pay my rent on time, they will deduct the fees first then apply what is left to the rent, therefore incurring yet another fee for late rent. This place needs to be sued. They give no notice for fees, or for violations. The property managers, little pet students go around and will find things to violate you on your lease, thereby incurring another fee, which btw they wont tell you about, until it's too late. This place may be cheap, but you will end up paying for it in the end. Run far far away from this place!! The tour and the staff will do anything to get you in here, but then once moved in...the meter starts running. I rented from spring 10 through summer 11. ...

When I first took the tour of this property, I thought this was a dream property. Two pools, volleyball courts and a 24 hour gym, and all for 407 a month! This was not including a utility allowance that seemed very generous. Then I moved in and started to realize that the tour was nothing more than a dog and pony show of epic proportions. The very first day I came to get my keys, they slammed me with a $300 fee, and finally gave me my keys. The key to the apartment is a hotel style key which is lost very easily, and a huge pain in the ass. I locked myself out 15 minutes after getting the keys and the office swiftly charged me $25.00 for someone to come let me in with a master key. This was my official welcome to this place now called "The District on 62nd" The first apartment I moved into was very clean, and I was matched with someone that really didn't want roomates, so eventually she moved into another apartment that had nobody else in it. So then lived by myself. 2 months after I moved in, my neighbor across the hall robbed the pizza delivery person at gunpoint in my breezeway and my upstairs neighbor was selling drugs from his apartment at all hours. I had to complain for several months regarding my upstairs neighbor not only selling drugs but having very loud parties almost nightly, urinating from his balcony, and throwing trash down onto my porch before anything was done. Finally I was transferred into another apartment with two other people. There was no roomate matching whatsoever with this. I was matched with 2 20 year olds who smoke pot nearly every night. In the first month with these 2 clowns One of them went to the office complaining that I was drinking in the house. I then received a 7 day correction notice and a $50.00 violation fee even though I didn't violate anything. These 2 roomates of mine also ate all of my food without replacing anything, bring unwelcome guests for extended stays, and also bring illegal substances into the house, yet the management does nothing. Most recently, I contacted the office to let them know I was going to be a little late for rent, and they informed me that I had over $400.00 worth of fees on my account, even though through the joke of an online payment system, my balance says 0.00. I was told that I would recieve a 7 day notice to pay or be evicted. These fees they claim I owe have never been explained to me, and when trying to contact someone, they hide behind their office doors, and refuse to speak with residents. Instead, they have "Customer Advocates" who are all students field all calls and take messages. These "CAs" know absolutely nothing. all they are is cheap labor to answer phones and do the bitch work for management. So I owe all this money in 7 days or I am out. Did I mention I put $2000.00 down to move in? not to mention another $4000.00 in rent so far and just signed another 15 month lease. What a huge mistake. If I were you I would run far far away from this place and never look back. The security is a joke, the management is a bigger joke, and the roomate matching is the biggest joke of all.. the only half way decent thing about this place is the new maintenance people. I rented from spring 10 through summer 11. ...

The management will try to find every which way to charge you additional fees to your rent. I had AC problems since I moved in. They would periodically fill the AC with freon. As a result of them taking the easy way out an never repairing the AC properly we began receiving ridiculous utility bill overages. In a 4/4 apt with only 2 people living in we somehow manage to go over by $320 one month. Needless to say we kept the AC at 77ΒΊF and neither one of cooked. The AC unit inside would periodically freeze. We would place maintance request that were always ignored. In order to get someone out to the apt we would need to complain for an extended period of time. For several nights one week during winter temperature dipped under 32ΒΊF. After placing several requests and speaking to management finally one week later the AC and heater was fixed. But for one week I had to endure temperatures in the 50's inside the apt. They did nothing to accommodate us. I rented from fall '07 through fall '08. ...

Ive read a lot of what people say about Melrose but I lived there for 2 years and didn't really think it was that bad. I never had a problem with not getting any of my maintenance requests filled. Parking at night time sucked though esp. on weekend when all the parties are happening. The roommate matching worked out really good for me, all 3 of the girls I lived with were great and we will be friends for life. I would reccomend it if your looking for a cheap place to live w/ all utilities included. I rented from summer '05 through summer '07. ...
