As a Freshman at Georgia State, my parents were super worried about getting me into a very secure apartment close to MARTA. We were so excited when we found Uptown Square. It was in the best location: near a bunch of great restaurants, near Lotus nightclub, close to MARTA, across from Target and Home Depot. I figured it was going to be wonderful! Then, I had a roommate issue on a split lease. They assured us that each of us would be equally liable for everything. Randomly, my roommate left, didn't leave a 60-day notice or anything...got away with it scuff free. They slipped last-second notes under the door (very unprofessionally) trying to get the other half of the rent from me about two weeks after it was already late. They didn't let me know she didn't make rent, so I ended up racking up over $500 in late fees. To this day, they have still not tried to contact her in any way and somehow took her name off the lease without my permission. After that fiasco, I was somewhat still happy with the grounds and area that I was going to stay. Then the noise problems started multiplying. The low-income housing on the other side of Piedmont was knocked down, leaving many tenants homeless and eventually pushing themselves our way. There are homeless people sleeping at the park and the construction site right outside my window. On top of that MARTA buses honk at all hours of the night and the thin walls make sure I hear every single employee conversation. The train that the salesman promised was no longer in service, toots its horn at all hours of the night. The walls are paper thin, the residents are the party type of college kids, the grounds are never swept, the pool barely ever gets cleaned, and the maintenance is neglecting. I've been calling for 3 months, trying to get my broken drier, porch door and garbage disposal fixed but they won't come up to help. The front office doesn't even seem to write anything down when I call for help. My biggest issue so far at my entire stay at Uptown is the lack of security. There was a (cheap, plastic) gate on the parking deck, but at least there was a gate when I moved in. A week after move in, it was knocked down by a drunk driver and left down for almost 5 months. The magnetic doors can be pushed open by a 5 year old (seen it happen), the key cards don't always work, the locks on both doors (patio and front door) of my apartment slip all the time, locking me outside or inside at any given time. Instead of something to make us feel more secure, little purple notes are taped to our doors telling us about break ins and that we should just call the APD at 911. HA! When I confronted the management about the issue, I was told "Hun, we never promised you security. There's nothing in your lease saying that we promise to have all of our gates working, so I can't help you." I really wish that I was exaggerating about some of this, but it's all real life experiences! Don't get me started on how steep rent is, but just take my warning that Uptown is double the hassle of what it's worth! I knew I should have moved into the Post Lindbergh. Same location, but atleast they seem to care about their tenants. I rented from summer '07 through spring '08. ...
