Average place to live, will nickel and dime residents I have lived in the Raleigh building for over 2 years now. The area the apartment building is located in leaves much to be desired, but the apartments themselves are okay. The space is appropriate for 1 person (maybe two people if you are in a larger layout and share a bedroom). I wouldn't suggest moving a family here, as that is not what the apartment is made for. The apartments are a little old and run down, but you get what you pay for. There are not pet fees, so everyone in the building has a dog or cat. Thus, the halls, elevator and stairwell always smell like animal and there is often urine that has yet to be cleaned. Additionally, my car as well as my neighbors car have been broken into (mine more than once). The parking is not gated, thus it is wise to take anything of value inside with you. My overall experience with the staff at Zender was positive until I moved out. When I put my 30 day notice in a received a letter saying that there was an enclosed checklist of items I needed to make sure were clean. However, the list wasn't there and when I called the staff didn't know what list I was talking about and I never received one. Once I moved out, I received a bill for $440 AFTER not returning my $150 deposit for carpet charges. When I moved in the carpet looked clean, but after a month the old stains came up through the carpet and weren't recorded on my move in sheet, thus the owners stuck me with insanely high carpet charges. In addition, they claimed that the damage under the carpet was so bad that they received $300 in additional charges that they so kindly passed on to me claiming that it was my responsibility. After calling them to discuss the charges they refused to consider removing the labor and "seal" charges even though I was not responsible for the damages. Additionally, while in talks with the office and trying to get more information, I was assured that while discussing everything with them my bill was pending. However, when I called them because I hadn't heard anything after a week I found out that they had filed a claim on me, even though I was still trying to work the bill out with them. During my time with Zender I paid my rent on time, never complained and was a good tenant. Unfortunately, that does not matter as I am not the only good tenant who has been charged hundreds of dollars after leaving. Zender markets itself as being an family owned company, but their policies are shady at best and they are only out for themselves.
