I've lived at Shore Acres for over a year now and was very happy to renew my lease. The complex is only about a mile north of the Broad Ripple Village area which is home to many fun clubs and restaurants. You can walk there on the Monon Trail, a well-maintained paved pathway that is accessible via a locked gate on the west side of the complex. The trail is one of the best things about living at Shore Acres and I frequently go running and cycling there during the summer. It is also a safe route to walk or bike to the grocery store, post office, and library which has saved me lots of money on gas while also giving me good exercise. The complex is very beautifully maintained with many bushes and plants. A crew comes by every week or two to keep things trimmed. Many residents also place plants or tasteful decorations outside their doors. Almost all the apartments face out onto their own courtyards. The only downside to this arrangement is that you can hear people who are having loud conversations on their way home or who thud noisily up the stairs. Cell phone reception is sometimes a bit iffy, so my neighbor occasionally goes outside in the summer to have conversations which I can halfway hear outside my window. The noise level is what I would expect from most apartments. I can sometimes hear the bass of my neighbor's stereo, but there has only been one occasion where it was loud enough that I needed to ask him to turn it down. I've never had problems finding a parking space and usually can park right outside my place. The laundry room has 5 washers and 5 dryers. I've never had to wait to use them and they've always worked. I've used the exercise room only once or twice, but it seems well-maintained and currently has a cycling machine, elliptical machine, a stairmaster, a treadmill and a weights area. There is a TV that you can watch while working out. There is also a room where you can lock your bikes away, but it was very crowded when I went to store my bike there so I just keep it in my apartment instead. I've used the pool once, but honestly it is more of a place for the younger residents to hang out, tan, and be seen than a place to swim. The staff is very friendly. The office will hold packages for you, which has been very handy when I've had stuff delivered and I wasn't home. There is usually only one person in the office though, so if they are off showing someone an apartment or dealing with a problem you will have to come back later for find them. All my maintenance requests have been handled quickly and completed well. I like the layout of my one-bedroom apartment. There is a bar height counter that looks into my main room, so I can eat at bar stools while watching TV or talking to people sitting on my couch. The walk-in closet is fantastic, particularly because there is lots of room to store stuff in there. My bedroom is pretty big. The bathroom is a little small, but the changing room area makes up for it which has a giant mirror and plenty of cabinets. My apartment door opens up to a privacy wall which also forms part of the kitchen. When I tried moving my very long couch into the apartment, it fit through the door fine, but we couldn't get it around the corner. I had to sell it, so be sure to measure your furniture to make sure it will fit or be sure you apartment layout isn't one with the kitchen wall right there by the door. The kitchen cabinets and fixtures are not the latest designs, but they are serviceable and work fine. There wasn't that great of a place to put my microwave, so it ended up on the bar counter. The cabinets also weren't quite big enough to house my cookie sheet, which now rests on top of my fridge. Otherwise I was able to store all my kitchen wares, but if you have a lot of that kind of stuff you might run out of room. The only way to get to the complex is via Westfield Blvd and the closest east/west cross streets that go across the White River (which weaves nearby and is very lovely) are 62nd St/Broad Ripple Ave and 86th street. This can sometimes be a pain if you are traveling east, but not so much of a problem is you are going west because 75th St is about a half mile north and cuts across to College and Meridian. The Broad Ripple Village area can sometimes get congested, particularly around the stop sign near the Monon Trail. The closest interstate is I-465, so if you are trying to get to another side of Indianapolis you'll have to go north to get on to that beltway or just make your way through town. It's a very nice neighborhood and I feel very safe here. I checked the crime rates before moving in and there is hardly any crime. The rent is very affordable for the Broad Ripple area and you're unlikely to find something this nice at a cheaper rate. I rented from fall '04 through summer '07. ...
