Two years ago when I was looking for a place in the Towson area to live, I looked through hundreds of reviews and visited countless apartment complexes. After much research, I decided to go with Rodgers Forge Apartments. There are a lot of things I
wanted to know about the complex before I moved in that I did not find the answer to. I decided that after my stay here, I would write a detailed review for anyone looking to move to the Towson/Baltimore area. Here it goesβ¦
Neighborhood
Rodgers Forge is a quiet neighborhood full of apartments and townhouses. There is an elementary school and a middle school right down the road. The complex is about five minutes from Towson University and ten to fifteen minutes from nearby shopping: Giant, Wal-Mart, Target, Towson Town Center, etc.
Property Amenities
The complex itself is very well kept. There is on-site management and maintenance.
There are several public bus stops in the complex, as well as Towson shuttle stops. There are two to three parking lots on each street and street parking. Each person on the lease gets a parking pass for the parking lot. All visitors must park on the street.
The complex is pet-friendly to most kids of pets. There are some breeds of dog that are not allowed (eg. Pit bulls).
Apartment Amenities
The apartment I rented was a two bedroom, two bathroom unit on the second floor. The complex also offers one bedroom and three bedroom units. The unit I rented included: washer/dryer, gas stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, cable/internet hookup, gas heat and central air conditioning. The apartment was newly remodeled and had hardwood floors throughout. The rent was a bit pricey ($1250/month) but for Baltimore, thatβs normal. The rent included water/sewer, so you had to pay gas/electric and cable/internet. They usually have some type of special to move in. When I moved in I got a free 32β TV and one month rent-free.
My Thoughts
Pros
*Quiet neighborhood
*Washer/Dryer in unit β saves you money and a trip to the laundry mat!
*Two full bathrooms β Nice if you have a roommate from college.
*Responsive maintenance β In my experience, the maintenance is pretty quick to respond to your problems. The window in my bathroom was leaking and they were there within an hour of my call to repair it. They also come around and change the air filters every so often.
*Nice apartment β I loved the apartment itself. It was very modern and was easy to make feel like home. The living room had high ceilings and was a nice size. The bedrooms were also a decent size for the furniture my roommate and I had. There were granite countertops in the kitchen and the bathrooms. There were a lot of windows in the apartment, which I loved. It was very open and bright.
*Heat/Air Conditioning β The apartment had itβs own thermostat which was nice. Other complexes I looked at controlled the heat settings and brought in window units in the summer.
*Proximity to Towson β I attended Towson during my 2 years living here. The campus was in walking distance, had I chosen to walk. There are also shuttle stops throughout the community as I mentioned before.
Cons β The cons section seems a lot longer, but itβs only because I took the time to explain why it was a con. Not just list them.
*Small Kitchen β The kitchen in the apartment was a bit small. There was just enough room to fit a small table in there for 2 people to sit at.
*Storage β The apartment was lacking in storage room. The master bedroom had a nice sized closet, but the second bedroom had a very small closet. My roommate and I decided whoever got the second bedroom would also get the hall closet to keep clothes in because there just wasnβt enough room. Other than the bedroom closets and the hall closet, there was no other storage space. The kitchen had small cabinets and not a lot of room for cooking tools and such.
*Parking β As I mentioned, there are parking lots and street parking available in the complex. However, there are more cars than there are parking spaces. There were times when I would get home from work around 10:30 PM and would have to park two streets away from my unit. But, there were also times I would come home and there would be plenty of parking. The lots were almost always full. I usually parked on the street because it was right in front of my unit. It just depended on how many people had guests over whether or not there would be room. I would not let this change my mind about living here. If you have to walk, you will get in some exercise!
*Snow β If you are from Maryland, you know that we can have some pretty bad winters. The two winters I was in Baltimore for were pretty bad. The maintenance crew did a good job at removing the snow from walkways. I canβt say the same for all of the tenants with their parking spots. When I would shovel, I would clear out all of the snow around my car. Others just cleared out enough to get out and then took my spot when they got home. This can get really aggravating when you get home late and have no place to park unless you shovel out a new spotβ¦ I would suggest putting something in your spot and hoping no one takes it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnβt.
*Mice β I lived here for a year and 7 months before I ever saw a mouse. I saw one mouse and caught it. I called management and told them about it and they sent the pest control people out to set traps. A few weeks later, I saw another mouse. By the time I moved out I had caught about five mice. I saw mouse droppings around, but didnβt always see the mouse. My apartment was VERY clean, so Iβm not sure why they were in there.
I hope that someone finds this review helpful. If you have any other questions about the complex, feel free to ask!
