My roommates and I visited the nice, freshly painted and fully-furnished model before we moved in, assuming, and being told, that our unit would look the same as the model. We were told that the apartment would be freshly painted, with brand new kitchen
appliances, along with a fully-furnished and carpeted living room and a wood floor in the kitchen. What we actually got was an apartment with yellowing wall paint, 1970's linoleum in the living room and kitchen and no furniture. After we moved in, the landlord told us "You have to buy your own furniture. Here is a company that we suggest to our tenants." The company sells unclean, used furniture at prices similar to that of a furniture store that sells brand new furniture. The landlord's idea of a "renovation" included vacuuming the carpet...and that's it. The landlord often arrived at the leasing office a few minutes late and left two hours early on most days. During the month that I lost my job and had to scrape to pay that month's rent, and only being two days late, I was threatened with eviction and court fees. The landlord, who has no personality, promised tenants nightly security - there was no security...at all. The "24-hour fitness center" consists of one treadmill and two ellipticals, one of which does not function properly, and after four months the gym was no longer open 24 hours - it was open during the leasing office's business hours. The electric company that Collegiate Commons partners with rips consumers off - during one month, my roommates and I had not used the a/c or the heat, and we had magically gone over the electricity allowance - other than showers, we had used the dishwasher once and w/d only three times that month. We did not cook during that month; we ate out, therefore, the stove and microwave were not used, either. We looked at the bill and spoke to other tenants about their utilities bill, and we learned that when the electricity is not used a lot during the billing period, the company hikes up the rate, causing tenants to go over the electricity allowance. The location is great, however, I would not recommend Collegiate Commons to anyone.
I rented from fall '09 through summer 10.
