I have been a tenant here for 5 years and earlier last year, chatham hill tried to terminate my lease. How did they do it' By sending me a letter stating that my rent would increase to $2610 if I did not sign a new lease. This was done just before the
Regional Property Manager at the time left the company. This was an outright illegal act, according to 2 New Jersey lawyers and New Jersey Legal Services. I wrote a certified letter of refusal and was never shown the courtesy of a written response. No 1 bedroom apartment in chatham hill were going for that price, not before and not now. Plus, the apt was not renovated and several repair items were never performed. Now I have heard that they would try to terminate my lease again to get a portion of the difference in rent by "just taking the money from my security deposit". Again, this will be another illegal act, according to the lawyers. In addition, I returned to my apartment to find my shower curtain torn with a deliberately-made large hole in the center. The Regional VP made it clear that no one was supposed to touch any personal items in a tenant's apartment. A shower curtain doesn't cost much, but it's another matter that underscores the home properties "don't care" attitude (home properties owns chatham hill apartments).
Yes, I have gone through my share of hoops all last year with these people who do not know how to treat tenants right. Plus, managers do not want to stay at chatham hill. Over the last 13 months alone, there have been SIX (6) home properties managers of chatham hill that I know of. Within a corporation I have not witnessed such a frequent turnover of one position in that period of time. During the same timeframe: there have been three (3) regional property managers.
After my own experience and speaking with my neighbours, previous chatham hill residents and a current J building resident, there is no doubt a history of poor, shoddy maintenance work, and non-compassionate treatment by home properties management.
I have tried to included pictures of what we have to put up with.
I rented from winter '03 through winter '08.
