I heard from multiple sources that living in Helaman Halls your freshman year at BYU was the way to go. While it may be the perfect arrangement for some it was far from perfect for me. The location is excellent. Only a short five minute walk from the gym and the heart of campus it could not have been more perfectly placed. The parking is also excellent with several lots right out of your front door. However, the wonderful parking was of no advantage to me and several other freshman who chose to live on campus due to the lack of a vehicle. The part about this arrangement that made it unbearable for me was the extremely small living quarters, price of meal plan, and availability of food or the lack thereof. You are required to purchase a meal plan in order to live in these accommodations. The price of a meal plan is 400 dollars a month, a steep 300 dollars above what the average college student spends on food. This limits your dining options to the cannon center, campus creameries or cougar eat. The cannon center has all the quantity any college student wants but is severely lacking in the quality department. The food is mediocre at best and extremely repetitive. It tastes of frozen, reheated, processed food much like what was found in your high school cafeteria. The hours of the Cannon Center are not conducive to the average college students dining habits. It closes at 7:30pm on week days and 5:30pm on Sundays. During the week 7:30pm is annoying on occasion but not de-habilitating. On Sundays, however, the 5:30 pm closure time ensures that a student who gets out of church at 3 pm can only dine once that day. If on a week day you are unable to dine at the Cannon Center due to the hours they provide another option, the Helaman creamery. The service is poor and options are limited. You can purchase pancakes between 10-11 if you have 30 minutes to spare that is while they accommodate your order at their leisure. The size of the room was the other half of what made this a deal breaker. It is an extremely small room with only the space for two twin sized beds and two small closets. There is no privacy or personal space for you or your roommate. Your roommate's sleeping schedule is also yours. If their light is on, the room is so small that it keeps you up. If I could do my freshman year over again I would select a different option. Heritage Halls offers the locational and social benefits of Helaman without the drawbacks of limited space and poor dining options. I rented from fall 2015 through winter 2016. ...

Honestly, I wouldn't live here again. The price you pay is insane for a small, shared room that feels like a prison. Also, with 36 girls packed into one hall, you can hear them yelling at 2am in the morning. However, there were a lot of social opportunities (mostly boring) and the meal plan was the best. The closeness to campus was probably the best thing. Living here for a full year was probably too long. ...

Helaman was not my thing. It is a good place to meet friends quickly, but not worth the price at all. The dorm rooms are tiny and you can hear EVERYTHING in the hallway. You are forced to get a meal plan which costs $400 and the food is awful after about two weeks. Don't waste your money here. Get a super nice apartment instead of living at Helaman. I have a love/hate relationship with Helaman. It's a great way to make friends, as you are pretty much required to be social when you live on top of everyone. Although it was a good freshman experience, I don't think I'd do it again. It is true that dorms gets tiresome after a semester, and it is SO unreasonably expensive. You are required to get a meal plan, which is usually around $400 a month, which is ridiculous. But it's a good place to transition from living at home to living on your own in a real apartment. I'd definitely recommend it to freshman who (despite how mature you might feel) are still getting used to the whole independence thing. Halls are super noisy, and it's impossible to get to sleep before midnight because of the noise, so it's a party all of the time. Kind of takes a toll on your studies. Living in the dorms is not for everyone, despite popular belief. I am a regularly friendly person, easy to get along with essentially, have a decent amount of friends, but I was NOT happy in the dorms and I know other normal people who weren't either. I came not knowing too many people and so I made tons of friends out of the girls in my hall, who were great. I NEVER talked to guys though, because I didn't know any beforehand, and it sucked. Luckily I had a good roommate and hall situation, but the girls on the floor below us definitely had a rougher time getting along, and they were in our ward and we hardly even knew them. I have heard many people say it feels very "highschool-y" and I would definitely have to agree. Even those that enjoy it a fair amount usually get pretty sick of it after a semester. I personally found the Canon Center to be awesome, but at the same time, I had to pay $400 a month for it. I now hardly pay $100 a month for groceries. I loved living at the dorms! This is where you meet all/most of your friends for college. They can get pretty loud sometimes but our hall instilled quiet hours about half way through the year because some girls were coming in at 4 am soo loud and it worked for the most part. I lived in Taylor and there is community bathrooms which is the definitely the way to go. They were always SOO clean! i never had to wait for a shower or toilet. The dorms are a very social place to live and allow you to make friends a lot easier than in an apartment. I lived in David John Hall, which has a suite that shares a bathroom. The place is really nice, but since the bathrooms are cleaned by the students, it can get pretty nasty.
